The New York Times gave a few hints to job-seekers this weekend with their recommendation on NOT using canned cover letters when applying to jobs. This may sound like stating the obvious, but the example they use to illustrate the problem is a photo studio who received nearly identical cover letters from several applicants. Turns out they were all using the Microsoft Word "cover letter" template. Needless to say, none of those folks landed the job.

Photographers search here to hire one of the 1,256 assistants listed on the database. Other highlights: tutorials on topics such as loading and unloading a 4X 5 film holder and web forums with topics like: what is the day rate in the DC area? This is a great tool for photographers and assistants.
Hello PDNEDU community! I'm Mary Virginia Swanson and I'll be adding marketing advice on the blog and answering your questions on the subject of getting your work out there. As Michelle has pointed out, now is the time to think about securing a summer internship. I can tell you that many students have already landed a positions for Summer '05 so if you haven't thought about what type of internship would best inform your professional goals, don't hesitate. If you hope to shoot editorially, the experience you'd gain at a magazine or newspaper would be great. Similarly, if you wish to exhibit your work at galleries and/or museums, time spent behind the scenes would provide great insights into how those markets work. If you have yet to write your resume, I'd suggest checking out www.jobstar.org and www.nataviguides.com for great advice. Be sure to have your professors review your final draft, and cover letter stating why you want to secure that position. But most importantly, don't hesisitate! I've met with students at SCAD, NESOP and SVA this spring, many of whom are already on the case. Internships are invaluable and if you contribute in a positive way, know that those subsequent recommendations on your behalf will be worth their weight in gold. Good luck!!
Here's a good opportunity to find out what photo editing is all about. Forbes.com is looking for a Photo Editing and Design Intern to work 10-15 hours a week from June - August. If on the surface financial magazines don't sound like glamorous places to work, just remember all the incredible photography that came out of Fortune magazine back in the day -- Margaret Bourke White, Charles Sheeler, Walker Evans.. And still today, there's some amazing portrait work that comes out of finanacial mags like Fortune, Kiplinger's, Fast Company and the like…

I must be on internship rant today, but i feel it's one of the most important thing's a young student can do. But before you venture out to your interview you might want to trim your hair, which i neglected to do!
Some great resources that i have found that list available internships
are the Princeton Review, which lists tons of jobs in every state.
Another site is the New York Foundation for the Arts, which is a must
look for any artist.
Also be sure to check out Craigslist, they list thousands of jobs (internships too!) for almost every major city.
To one up the recent FHM photo assistant job, Playboy has announced that they are looking for some young interns to roam their halls! Can you believe this, this must be every college boys dream job! Perks include as listed on the website "Attendance at promotional and publicity events; free t-shirts and mugs" hmm i think a free mug will be the last thing on ones mind when hanging with Mr. Hefner.
