Alternative Process Competition

I'm feeling nostalgic for the good old days -- when I suffered through classes in alternative processes.

I didn't get such a good grade for my efforts since I used the same exact image for my Cyanotype and VanDyke prints. I told my professor that I wanted to see how the printing process changed the quality of the image but he saw through my laziness and brought down my GPA.

But why am I telling you this?

I have been inspired by SOHO Photo's Second Annual Alternative Processes Competition. 25-30 photographers will exhibit their winning entries in a group show at the Soho Photo Gallery in NYC from May 2 - June 3.

You can enter images printed as Cyanotype, VanDyke, Platinum, Palladium, Kwik Print©, Gum Bichromate, Bromoil, Gumoil, Calotype, Tintype, Daguerreotype, and Polaroid© Transfer. Silver prints, c-prints and digital prints will not be accepted nor anything larger than 5 feet.

Entries must be received by March 10. Submit your work on 35mm Slides or Cd's. You are allowed to enter 4 images. The cost is $35. Download a prospectus.

Be Popular!

1104200512160116jpg_2__Popular Photography magazine has a new contest for college photography students. The contest is free to enter, entries are via email and a Sony digital camera is to be given away to a winning photographer each week from December through May.

I just took a look at the entries they've received so far and I'm here to tell ya... regular readers of this blog could clean up in this thing, as many of the entries that I saw weren't all that, um...  enthralling (the image I've posted here was one of the better ones, in my estimation).

One drawback is that, according to the rules, PopPhoto retains the rights to the images you submit, so beware of submitting your very best stuff.

So, go to http://www.PopPhoto.com and check it out. You could win a camera to take on a Spring Break trip!

Even more exciting, this year Open House New York is sponsoring a photo contest to boot.

So, if interior and architectural photography is your thing, you should definitely check it out.  The judges include "Invisible New York" photographer Stanley Greenberg and Bob Shamis, the photo curator at the Museum of the City of New York.
