Summer Internships

Summer Internships

It's not too early to start applying for summer internships. If you're not already familiar with your school's internship program, make an appointment now with your advisor. Here at PDN we are currently accepting applications for two photo-related internships available this Summer. (Our only requirement— after an interview—is that you must earn at least one college credit for interning with us). If you're interested in interning at PDN, feel free to contact me at jfijol@pdnonline.com. Otherwise, check mediabistro.com for magazine internship opportunities, and click through to the job listings pages of other companies, they often list internships on their own sites.  Additionally, you can start contacting photographers that you admire and inquire about spending time with them. Remember to be brief and informed when cold calling!  Good luck!

Discover NEED magazine

I recently came across the quarterly humanitarian magazine NEED. Published out of Minneapolis, MN this recent launch (I'm looking at issue 6) caught my attention for having wonderful photography and a very important mission: to inspire action by sharing stories of hope from humanitarian work around the globe.  Issue 6 features photography from Yan Seiler, John Abernathy, Paul Corbit Brown, Bronson Enriquez, Johnathan Alpeyrie, Jeffrey Austin, Kyra Gibson, Nathan G and James Nachtwey—all printed with soy ink! You can also visit them online here. I especially enjoyed the blog post where they've posted pictures of staff on press for issue 6. Including a shot of the CEO Stephanie Kinnunen and Photo Editor Bronson Enriquez checking color reproductions.
NEED is certainly worth checking out—and pitching— if you feel you've got the right picture essay for an upcoming issue. From the site:
PHOTOGRAPHERS:
NEED magazine's dynamic visual narrative is not only compelling, but also drives awareness, involvement, personal connection and contributions. As NEED magazine continues to expand, we are always looking for photographers and photojournalists that specialize in the fields of international development and humanitarian affairs.

One-year subscriptions are $27 (US), $33, (Canada) and $54 (International).

A Conversation with Photographer Paul Graham

Monday, February 9, 7pm

The BFA Photography Department at School of Visual Arts (SVA) and Dear Dave, magazine present photographer Paul Graham in conversation with The New York Times writer Philip Gefter. Graham is the subject of the exhibition “a shimmer of possibility,” which will be on view at The Museum of Modern Art from February 4 - May 18. The first in a series of monthly conversations exploring contemporary photography among noted artists, critics, curators and editors, the event will take place on Monday, February 9, 7pm, at the recently opened Visual Arts Theater, 333 West 23 Street, New York City. Admission is free.

British-born Paul Graham is recognized for his innovative and experimental contextualization of images and particularly tender observation of daily life. Since relocating to the U.S. in 2002, he has traveled extensively to photograph the country. The resulting work, a shimmer of possibility, was published in twelve volumes by steidlMACK in 2007.

Philip Gefter writes frequently about photography for The New York Times and was its front-page picture editor. A collection of his essays will be published in April by Aperture as Photography After Frank. He is writing a biography of the collector Sam Wagstaff.

Students in the BFA Photography Department at SVA are immersed in all aspects of commercial and fine art photography, giving them a better understanding of various genres, ideas and vocabularies. With access to cutting-edge facilities--as well as a 100-plus faculty of photographers, museum directors, critics, art directors, photo editors and photography collectors--students are able to cultivate their own sensibility and visual style.

Dear Dave, is a magazine of photography and writing that has been published three times a year since 2007.

Vanity Fair: The New Recessionista

By Guest Blogumnist, Cara Brooke Schultz

The recession is taking a hit on every industry, especially the media. With numbers down across the board—The Tribune Company filed for bankruptcy, Doubledown Media has shut down, and Condé Nast ceased production of Cosmogirl and Domino magazines—it seems like every company is doing whatever they can to stay afloat.

Perhaps we can call Vanity Fair magazine the next “recessionista” for recycling a photo for the cover of their March 2009 issue. The original photograph, shot by Annie Leibovitz, was used on the cover in July 2007. Vanity Fair acknowledges the reuse in the following statement on their Web site, “This portrait of Obama, then a senator, was originally taken for one of 20 covers on Vanity Fair’s Africa issue of July 2007.”

What do you think about the decision to reuse an image that's almost two years old?
