A Coming-Out Curator Party

An ambitious gallery project opening this week at BOND STREET GALLERY will showcase a cornucopia of emerging photographic work by putting the curators in the spotlight.

Organized by the Humble Arts Foundation’s Amani Olu, Young Curators, New Ideas will allow new and seasoned curators to utilize about 10 feet of space to engage viewers in a discussion about current photography.

We’re particularly excited to see curators from Fjord Photo on the bill. Alana Celii and Grant Willing have organized their show Voluspá around themes of magic, otherworldiness, secrets and nostalgia. They will be showcasing photographers from the Fjord photography collective—an online showcase of new and emerging photographers—that include Mikaylah Bowman, Gerald Edwards III, Bryan Lear, Miranda Lehman, Seth Lower, Mark McKnight, Erin Jane Nelson, and Jesper Ulvelius.

Other curators include:

  • Artist Michael Buhler-Rose, presenting the portraiture of Charles Benton
  • Art director Jon Feinstein’s exhibition from three photographers examining notions of science, mysticism and astronomy
  • Curator Laurel Ptak, displaying a feat of organization showing 26 artists’ embrace of a 1980’s-era technology called Graphics Interchange Format
  • Photographer and critic Amy Stein, displaying five photographers examining notions of self
  • Writer/curator Lumi Tan’s exhibition of Brian Bress’s chaotic and absurdist photography

The opening reception is Wednesday, August 13, from 6 to 9 p.m and the exhibition will remain until September 6.

BOND STREET GALLERY is located at 297 Bond Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231; phone: 718-858-2297; gallery hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm.Ycnipostcard
